IPSec (short for Internet protocol security) is a set of a Layer-3 protocols used for secure communication over the Internet.

The IPSec protocol allows for secure private communications because it basically uses a virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet offering the capability to establish an encrypted tunnel between the access points. The VPN will ensure authentication, integrity and confidentiality protection of network traffic on the Internet communication path. IPSec will protect the traffic at the network layer and be transparent to end-user applications.
